Description
Xtralis OSID Smoke Beam Detector (Open-area Smoke Imaging Detection) is an innovative projected beam smoke detection system from Xtralis (now part of Honeywell)—revolutionizing linear optical detection for large, open spaces like warehouses, atriums, airports, stadiums, shopping malls, hangars, and high-ceiling facilities where traditional spot detectors or conventional beams struggle with coverage, false alarms, or installation challenges.
OSID uses patented dual-wavelength (UV and IR) LED-based technology combined with optical imaging via a CMOS chip in the Imager unit. Emitters project synchronized UV/IR light pulses across the protected area; the Imager measures smoke-induced obscuration while distinguishing particle sizes—rejecting dust, solid intrusions, fog, steam, reflections, sunlight, and environmental nuisances for superior false alarm immunity.
Available in dual-ended (OSID-DE) configurations (Imager + multiple Emitters) and reflective (OSID-R/OSI-RE) models (combined transmitter/receiver with reflector), it offers flexible coverage: up to 150m (492 ft) range for OSI-10 models, wide fields of view (7° to 90°), and multi-emitter support (one Imager covering up to 7 Emitters) for 3D volumetric protection.
The system provides early warning smoke detection with selectable alarm thresholds (20%, 35%, 50% obscuration), status LEDs (Fire, Trouble, Power), relay outputs, and optional heating to prevent condensation. Battery-powered Emitters (up to 5-year life) simplify installation in hard-to-wire locations.
OSID integrates seamlessly with Potter fire alarm panels for coordinated detection and release, Starlink 24-hour monitoring for reliable code-compliant alerting, and suppression systems like Fike ECARO-25, Firetrace, Stat-X, or Badger to enable rapid response in high-risk open areas.
Key Benefits
- Exceptional false alarm rejection — Dual-wavelength particle discrimination ignores dust, insects, birds, building movement, high airflow, and lighting variations—far superior to traditional beams.
- Wide coverage & flexibility — Protects vast areas (up to 150m range, wide FOV options) with fewer devices; tolerant of structural shifts, vibration, and misalignment drift.
- Easy installation & commissioning — Automatic alignment in minutes (laser tool-assisted); ball-and-socket mounting; no precise aiming needed; battery options reduce wiring costs and time (up to 70% savings vs. conventional beams).
- Reliable & low-maintenance — Long-life components; on-board diagnostics/event log; simple DIP-switch configuration; minimal calibration required.
- High performance in harsh environments — Operates in extreme temperatures (-10°C to 55°C), high humidity, dust, and sunlight; IP-rated optics/electronics.
- Code-compliant & certified — UL, ULC, CSFM, AFNOR, CE, VdS, ActivFire, and more; meets NFPA and international standards for beam smoke detection.
- Aesthetically discreet — Compact, modern design blends into open architectures while providing robust, early detection.
Ideal for protecting large-volume spaces where rapid smoke detection is critical to life safety, asset protection, and business continuity—especially in industrial, commercial, cultural heritage, data centers, or gigafactory environments.
